Overview

Black Copy was my first robotics project — and the one that changed everything. Built entirely solo for Robowars 2024, this autonomous sumo robot marked my entry into the world of robotics, embedded systems, and competitive engineering.

In a competition where teams are the norm, I took on every aspect myself: mechanical design, electronics, and programming. It was ambitious, chaotic, and exactly what I needed.

Technical Details

Mechanical Design

  • Complete CAD design from scratch
  • 3D printed chassis and components
  • First experience with design-for-manufacturing principles

Electronics

  • Motor driver integration and wiring
  • Power distribution system
  • Sensor mounting and cable management

Software

  • Microcontroller programming in C++
  • PWM control for motor speed regulation
  • Basic autonomous behavior logic

What I Learned

This project was a crash course in:

  • Motor drivers: How H-bridges work, PWM duty cycles, and current handling
  • Microcontrollers: GPIO, timers, interrupts, and real-time control
  • CAD & 3D Printing: Tolerances, print orientation, and iterative design
  • Systems thinking: How mechanical, electrical, and software interact

Outcome

Competed at Robowars 2024 and placed 4th. More importantly, I walked away knowing that robotics was my path forward.
