Overview
Black Copy was my first robotics project — and the one that changed everything. Built entirely solo for Robowars 2024, this autonomous sumo robot marked my entry into the world of robotics, embedded systems, and competitive engineering.
In a competition where teams are the norm, I took on every aspect myself: mechanical design, electronics, and programming. It was ambitious, chaotic, and exactly what I needed.
Technical Details
Mechanical Design
- Complete CAD design from scratch
- 3D printed chassis and components
- First experience with design-for-manufacturing principles
Electronics
- Motor driver integration and wiring
- Power distribution system
- Sensor mounting and cable management
Software
- Microcontroller programming in C++
- PWM control for motor speed regulation
- Basic autonomous behavior logic
What I Learned
This project was a crash course in:
- Motor drivers: How H-bridges work, PWM duty cycles, and current handling
- Microcontrollers: GPIO, timers, interrupts, and real-time control
- CAD & 3D Printing: Tolerances, print orientation, and iterative design
- Systems thinking: How mechanical, electrical, and software interact
Outcome
Competed at Robowars 2024 and placed 4th. More importantly, I walked away knowing that robotics was my path forward.
